Care and protection of your fistula will give you the convenience of long-term use of your fistula. Therefore, we want to emphasize that you need to be careful. The longest used and reliable way for hemodialysis is fistula. Keep your arm high after the fistula is opened. Do a gymnastic by opening or closing a plastic ball or your hand. This will help your fistula develop more quickly. The development period varies between 15 days and 2 months. Check the vibration of your fistula (Trill), more often at the beginning. If the vibration is weak or not, you should call our center at any time of the day. Indicates that your fistula is not working.

Before coming to the dialysis session, wash your arm with warm water in the morning and dry it with a clean towel. As this process will remove bacteria from the skin, it will protect your fistula against infections. Do not press too hard on the needle exit areas at the end of dialysis. Because excessive pressure can cause your fistula to stop. You should keep the sponge (gauze) placed on your arm for at least 2 hours to stop bleeding. Thus, you will protect your fistula from microbes. When redness, swelling and pain occurs in the fistula at the needle entry points, you should immediately inform your nurse and doctor. Make sure that the needle entry points are from different points in each dialysis session. When the needle is inserted at the same point continuously, thinning and tearing and unstoppable bleeding may occur at that point. It is important to change the needle entry points alternately for the longevity of your fistula.

If you want your fistula or graft to last longer, we suggest you pay attention to the following points. – Check your fistula by touching your fistula at different times each day. . ..- If there is a decrease or change in the fistula sound, you should definitely inform your nurse and doctor.

From time to time, your blood pressure may drop in your home. Low blood pressure is dangerous for your fistula. In this case, you should immediately lie down and raise your feet up as we did during dialysis. To do this, you can lie on the floor and rest your feet on the couch or on the wall. In the meantime, you should drink a glass of salty ayran and have your blood pressure measured again. If your blood pressure does not rise to its normal level even though you lift your legs up, you should check your fistula for a decrease in its sound.

The most common reason for the fistula problem is to try to pull the excess weight (over 2.5 – 3 kg) that occurs as a result of taking too much fluid between the two dialysis. Consequently, the “hypotension” (low blood pressure) episodes that occur in this situation, which creates the necessity of rapid and excessive fluid withdrawal, causes the fistula to clog – over time.
