It was first made by Kolff, a Dutch physician, in 1944. It is the process of cleaning the patient’s blood with a special membrane through machines. Sufficient blood flow should be provided for hemodialysis to be performed, and a membrane and hemodialysis machine should be provided. To ensure adequate blood flow, a window (arteriovenous fistula) should be created between the patient’s beats and vein or a temporary catheter should be inserted into the patient’s large vein. Hemodialysis treatment is applied 2-3 times a week for 4-6 hours depending on the severity of kidney failure and the amount of urine. Inadequate hemodialysis treatment can lead to injury and death in the patient. Hemodialysis treatment is usually applied in the hospital or in a hemodialysis unit. However, it can also be applied at home with suitable machinery and equipment.
There are about 50 thousand hemodialysis patients in Turkey.
Hemodialysis is a treatment in which blood is filtered through a dialysis machine outside the body. During hemodialysis, blood is drawn from a vein and passed through a synthetic filter called a dialysis machine. In this dialysis machine, the blood is cleaned before returning to the body, so the dialysis machine is also called “artificial kidney”. Hemodialysis is usually done in a dialysis unit three times a week for at least four hours. An alternative to a clinical-based dialysis treatment is to be treated in a familiar setting at home. Different types of home dialysis allow patients to adapt their treatment to their daily routines. However, each treatment has its own challenges.
When hemodialysis is the best
Hemodialysis session, which lasts at least four hours three times a week with modern dialysis machines, is usually what you need. During this period, patients remain connected to the dialysis machine. This is really remarkable, given that the dialysis machine is trying to do twelve hours a week, which healthy kidneys do continuously throughout the week. By taking the right steps, we can help you live as healthy as possible.
