History

Gaziosmanpaşa district area used to be within the borders of Eyüpsultan and Çatalca districts. The lands in the southeast, where the district center is located today, were empty until the 1950s. Since these lands within the borders of Eyüp district were arid and stony, they were called Taşlıtarla among the people.

Before 1950, there were several workshop-type workshops with pens established by those dealing with animal husbandry. The adventure of Taşlıtarla, which started in 1952 with the houses built by the state for Balkan immigrants, gained momentum with the shift of industry to Rami and Eyüp since the 1960s, and today the giant Gaziosmanpaşa district where 1 million people live has emerged. In a sense, Taşlıtarla is considered the core of Gaziosmanpaşa district. Taşlıtarla, which was the suburb of the city until recently, has gained a modern appearance with its giant skyscrapers, shopping malls, computerized schools and entertainment centers.

Taşlıtarla was a neighborhood of Küçükköy, which was connected to the Rami District of Eyüp until 1958. According to a study conducted in 1962, it is estimated that approximately 90 thousand people live in 18 thousand slums in Taşlıtarla. Taşlıtarla, which was the center of Göktepe Subdistrict established in Eyüp District due to the rapid increase of the population, became the center of Gaziosmanpaşa District, which was created in the areas around the subdistrict in 1963, and after that it became known as Gaziosmanpaşa.

Some villages of Rami Subdistrict and Hadımköy Subdistrict of Çatalca district joined Gaziosmanpaşa district. Before 1970, when Tayakadın Village of Çatalca was connected to Yeniköy, a rural settlement of Çatalca before 1990, Gaziosmanpaşa District reached its present borders.

The urban development of Gaziosmanpaşa best shows the population development of the district. As a result of an urbanization that can be seen in very few parts of the world, the population of Gaziosmanpaşa grew extraordinarily in 60 years between 1935-1997 and increased 165 times. The population of the district increased from 3847 in 1935 to 635,000.
